Southern Indiana Cooperative Weed Management Area - Show Your Hoosier Roots, Go Native - Not Invasive!!!
Japanese Chaff Flower Survey

Weed Watcher Call To Action!

SICWMA is performing a survey to map the current range of Japanese Chaff Flower in Indiana and we need your help.  Chaff flower (Achyranthes japonica) is known to have invaded the Ohio River floodplain in Indiana and surrounding states but the extent of this plant’s spread northward into Indiana is unknown. (link to map)  To help manage the spread of this highly invasive perennial plant we need you to help us map where it is now.  The survey will focus on the lower tier of counties directly adjacent to the river initially so if you are in these areas or want to go there we need you!
Ron Rathfon  has designed a survey, laid out points on the map that are likely locations and has offered to help people learn how to collect the data. Most survey points are located along public roads and can be reached by automobile.  The survey is designed for someone who may have one day or only part of a day to cover a limited stretch of the Ohio River and its tributaries.  If you are interested in helping increase our knowledge of this rapidly expanding invasive species please contact us by email at edrr@sicwma.org or by phone at 812-797-8783
